I love coffee. I savor the ritual of brewing a cup.
The sound and smells of the freshly grounded beans center me. The sight of the water beginning to roil close to a boil brings me present.
I relish the taste of a cup of black coffee and enjoy the many positive benefits that coffee brings into my life, beyond the pleasure of sipping a cup.
Coffee impacts my daily performance in the various roles of my life by:
Making me more driven and focused at my primary job.
Helping me be a more attentive and alert father.
Allowing me to achieve higher states of fitness through more focus and determination within bouts of exercise.
Providing a ritualistic component to my life that helps fuel creative states and the creative process for me.
Major Wellness Considerations
If you are a daily coffee consumer like me, then rest assured, there are significant wellness benefits to be gained well beyond focus and ritual.
Those benefits are:
Coffee can help with burning fat! Yes, caffeine has actually been proven to be a positive agent for burning fat through an increase of your metabolic rate.
Coffee can be protective against type 2 diabetes.
Coffee can reduce your risk of experiencing kidney stones in your body.
Coffee is rich in antioxidants and your body may be primed to absorb them more from a cup of coffee than from eating fruit.
Coffee can provide a short-term memory boost and even more encouraging can potentially stave off the cognitive decline from the debilitating effects of Alzheimer’s and dementia.
Coffee can help enhance our moods and for women especially, can help prevent depression.
The older I get the more I want to minimize things that impede me from enjoying life. Sugar, wheat, and alcohol have all either proven best to be consumed in rare moments or perhaps even better to be completely eliminated from my life.
On the contrary, I also want to emphasize items and routines that contribute to my ability to create more joy in life. Coffee has clearly been identified as a beverage that fits firmly in this category.
Too Much Of A Good Thing?
Coffee for me, like most anything in life, can have diminishing returns if consumed too much, though. My true sweet spot in getting the absolute most enjoyment from the ritual and taste of coffee, while also experiencing a positive alertness perk, is drinking 2 small caffeinated cups a day.
Drinking both cups in the morning hours prior to noon also ensures no negative impact on my sleep at night as well. I have also fully embraced decaffeinated roasts as a means to enjoy multiple cups per day into the afternoon and evening.
I drink dark roasts and light roasts. If I am not drinking a bulletproof style coffee then I am drinking it black. No milk, sugar, or anything gets in the way of my cherished taste of black coffee.
Mushroom Fortified Coffee
Coffee fortified with mushroom extract has also become a consistent favorite in my coffee routine. These instant coffee packets from Four Sigmatic are easy to brew up and I love the positive wellness benefits associated with consuming mushrooms.
Those benefits can include:
Better regulation of blood sugar levels
Prevention of adrenal fatigue
Rich boost of antioxidants
The mushroom coffee from Four Sigmatic also contains minimal amounts of caffeine, just 40mg per serving, so it can also serve as another means to enjoy a cup of coffee in the afternoon without derailing a sound night of sleep.
My Beloved Aeropress
At home, for my traditional coffee brewing, I use an Aeropress single cup coffee maker which I find to be convenient. It has similar mechanics to a french press and allows the use of fresh grounds. It brews a rich cup of coffee every time and is easy to clean.
I used to use the paper coffee filters, but have since stepped up to a mesh steel filter. In addition to the savings of recurring mesh filter purchases, the steel filter increases the richness of the coffee by allowing more oils from the grounds to pass through into the cup.
In addition to home brewing, I also love getting out into the neighborhood to enjoy a rotation of different coffee options. I have some local hometown shops and of course a Starbucks as well.
Some people love to knock Starbucks, but I respect and enjoy their coffee. I find it is always a quality cup and I love their holiday roasts. Recently I traveled to D.C. and enjoyed my first Starbucks reserved roast experience, brewed on their Clover brewing machine. It was a rich cup of coffee, like the most extracted cup possible from a premium french press system.
Coffee For Life, Literally
Coffee is enmeshed in my life. It may seem trivial to wax poetically about a beverage, but when you consider two recent studies have shown increased coffee consumption can lead to a longer life, it is not being too carried away to publicly profess my adoration for all things coffee.
I am a more thoughtful, productive, creative, and driven person, in small part to my daily cups of coffee. If I maintain a mindful intent with 2 small caffeinated cups per day, coffee then provides a consistent return of benefits unlike many other foods or supplements out there.
Coffee has earned its rightful place in my life as a champion amongst contenders. It is a daily ritual I have locked in for life. Cheers.
