Podcasts To Listen To: Scandal...Stan Lee's World

Stan Lee

Pop Culture Icon

I can not think of any other artist who has made the kind of pervasive and persistent impression on Pop Culture as comic book genius Stan Lee has.

The characters he created are enmeshed in the fabrics of our lives through varying media and an endless stream of branded product. From blockbuster commercial movie success to the Spider-Man pajamas my son adorns at bedtime, his mark has been left indelibly on our society and we are the better for it.

With this kind of generational, lightning in a bottle success comes a massive empire of riches and assets. Stan Lee had amassed the kind of wealth that most common working folk cannot even begin to wrap their heads around.

Having that kind of lucrative empire attached to the iconic nature of Stan’s illustrious career tends to bring people out of the woodwork day and night angling to secure some sort of benefit from Stan’s vast comic kingdom.

9 Things I Would Tell My 18-Year-Old Self

Inspiration Through Gratitude

Reflecting Back

In life, you have to suffer through challenges and failures but hopefully grow as a result from enduring them. There is plenty of advice being offered all around us when growing up, but when we are young, we are predisposed to often tuning it out.

While I have compiled here 9 nuggets of advice to relay to my 18-year-old self, this perspective can most likely only be learned over time and through actual life experience.

Putting aside the current limitations of time travel, if I was somehow able to bestow all of these suggestions to my 18-year-old self, I am not sure it would have made a bit of difference in my life. Words and suggestions can help guide and cajole, but life experience is indeed the ultimate teacher.

The #1 Keto Diet Mistake You Need To Avoid

Keto Diet

What Is Keto

The keto diet, short for ketogenic, is a dietary strategy that focuses on restricting carbs in favor of consuming high amounts of healthy fats and eating moderate amounts of protein.

There are varying methods and sub-strategies under the low-carb umbrella like modified keto, the carnivore diet, low-fat keto, and high-protein, although keto purist might argue against some of these as being methods that do not produce a constant state of ketosis.

Ketosis

Our bodies can reach a state of nutritional ketosis as a result of extended, restricted carbohydrate intake. We begin burning fat for fuel, instead of sugar from carbs, and begin producing ketones which can be a powerful fuel source for our bodies and brains.

When I am in ketosis I feel alert and clear-headed with a steady and sustainable source of energy. I initially came to the ketogenic lifestyle to shed a few extra pounds but I have stuck around with this strategy of eating to keep reaping the mental clarity and sustained energy benefits.

The 7 Best Episodes Of The Ex-Man Podcast With Doc Coyle

The Ex-Man Podcast

Riding The Wave

I have always been fascinated by underground music. I have distinct memories of being around 6 years old when MTV first debuted back in 1981. Back then, they featured lots of British bands in their rotation. Videos from Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, and Madness had me riveted to the TV and my brain permanently wired to seek out alternative pathways for exploring new music.

In the early 2000’s there was another era of underground music that I had the fortune of becoming engrossed in as well. This movement was the New Wave of American Heavy Metal and it made significant noise in the industry through a variety of bands fusing various influences like thrash and hardcore punk.

Bands within this scene reached commercial heights that will most likely never be met again by such a large number of artists at the same time under the realm of aggressive rock ‘n roll. Metalcore, as the scene and style of music, got tagged, exploded.

Bands like Lamb of God and Shadows Fall toured worldwide and had coveted slots on the iconic national touring property Ozzfest. MTV revived Headbangers Ball to get in on the resurgence of metal and many bands from this time sold well into the hundreds of thousands of album sales.

Doc Coyle

God Forbid from New Jersey was one of those bands that were firmly entrenched with street credibility, commercial sales, major tours, and the chops on stage to hang with the scenes preeminent acts. Doc Coyle was a co-founder and guitarist from God Forbid and was globally recognized as one of the truly good dudes from that era.

9 Ways Meditation Has Changed My Life

The Power Of Meditation

Inroads To The Mainstream

Meditation, or the general practice of mindfulness, seems to be slowly making inroads into the collective consciousness of the mainstream.

Just about anywhere you turn these days you seem to run into an article, podcast discussion, or some sort of social site mention about the benefits of meditation.

I understand the desire of those who practice meditation to want to share with the world the benefits they have been experiencing, but in the past, I have found myself a little hesitant to bring up the subject amongst my peers.

Something about voluntarily sharing that I meditate felt like bragging and maybe even coming off as slightly pompous, so I have kept my practice close to my heart until recently.

I can no longer hold back, though, from sharing the many benefits that meditation has brought into my life.

Podcasts To Listen To: The Dream

The Dream

A Stitcher Original Series Podcast

I would imagine that most people could relate to feeling some sort of sense that there is something better for them out there in the world.

At one time or another, most have probably felt the pull of an opportunity offering the promise of a purpose and an upgraded lifestyle if they just remained focused on the goal with positive intentions.

If cultivated in the right manner, these desires could be used to harness action towards a worthwhile pursuit in life. If left unchecked, these yearnings could be preyed upon and taken advantage of without the slightest hint of impropriety ever being revealed in the offering until it was too late and the damage was done.

The Dream is a brand new podcast offering hosted by award winning journalist Jane Marie that takes a hard, investigative look at multi-level marketing, a model of selling and distributing products peer to peer with a tiered sales recruiting component being the fulcrum of the entire operation.

ESPN Fantasy Focus Football Podcast

Premium Fantasy Football Analysis

I doubt this piece will ever reach Matthew Berry, Field Yates, or anyone else connected to the ESPN Fantasy Focus Football podcast. Should it ever somehow, though, I hope they can sense that the overarching tone of this article is one of love.

If any frustration or constructive criticism is pouring out of me and onto my computer screen as I type away, it is fully stemming from a place of genuine care and appreciation as well.

I think the team on the ESPN Fantasy Focus Football podcast do an incredible job at bringing compelling, informative, and insider worthy content to their audience show after show, week after week, for basically the entire calendar year.

Podcasts To Listen To: Words Matter

Words Matter Podcast

A Stalled Political System

Politics in the United States is beyond a hot mess and it has been for years. The car crash analogy is a fitting one: As painful and sad as the wreckage all appears to be I just can not turn away from looking.

On one hand, I am completely fatigued by the incessant churning of the 24-hour political news cycle while on the other hand I am routinely drawn into getting a daily fix of stories and analysis.

I will put this out there right up front, I am left-leaning, but I suspect like the majority of Americans I gravitate towards the middle.

While I am fully supportive of the social freedoms the Democrats espouse, I am disheartened by their lack of vision and incapability of voicing a cohesive message. In the face of our mounting federal debt, I am intrigued by fiscally conservative principles touted by traditional Republicans, but where are the supportive actions and policies? Bush exploded the debt while in office and the trickle down theory is a joke in practice with wealth disparity raging out of control.

Bodies Podcast

The Wonder Of Our Bodies

Our bodies, their functionality, and their intricate design are truly something to marvel at. Our bodies can also, unfortunately, veer off into dysfunctional physiological behavior, firing off discomforting or even bizarre outbreaks of symptoms at times.

Oftentimes, many of us ignore rashes, bumps, or other more alarming signals from our bodies in hopes that whatever the heck is causing the current malfunctioning will simply go away.

When we do finally find the time or get up the necessary courage to go see a doctor, we are often treated to a 5-minute crash course visit with an overworked and seemingly uninterested healthcare provider who quickly grabs for a prescription pad prior to even having an in-depth or probative conversation with us.
